WAC reprimands Morrill

Here is the release the WAC sent out just before midnight. Luckily I don't have a life so I was still at the office when it was sent out.

WAC REPRIMANDS UTAH STATE’S STEW MORRILL
DENVER – Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson announced today that Utah State University men's basketball coach Stew Morrill has been publicly reprimanded for violating the WAC’s sportsmanship code during the March 6 game against New Mexico State.
Following a technical foul by a New Mexico State player, Morrill directed “provocative language” towards the player. This clearly violated the WAC’s sportsmanship code and any further violations of the code may result in a minimum of a one game suspension.

Jason,

Any idea what was said by the coach and what the technical foul was all about?

I watched the online broadcast and wasn't able to see what transpired. It did look like the Utah State coach was doing some jawing after the foul was called as Jahmar was walking away.

I hope to get some explanation tomorrow, but I'm sure it won't be language suited for print

Thanks. A hint or two would be nice.

You know, it's funny. The Utah State coach was just awarded as WAC Coach of the Year. Guess the award is more about winning games than it is about being a good sport...

Good thing it's language perfect for a blog! give us a quote.

Stew Morrill is a heart attack waiting to happen.

Jason,

Someone elses alluded to this in your previous blog and I was wondering the same thing. Other than the public reprimand, is there anything that will or should be done? Its not every day that a coach tells the media that he wanted to fight a player. Is there anything against this or is it simply a quote?

They should ban SM from the next game against NMSU like they did to Pistol Pete.

From reading the release from the WAC and hearing Benson cite the Steve Alford incident, I would doubt any suspension for this behavior. I'm not defending Morrill's quote in the paper, but from talking to him throughout the past three years, sometimes after losses, I think you shouldn't read the quote so literally. Every coach probably says something to the media they come to regret. I would be surprised if the WAC does anything else, but it should give reporters in Reno something to grill Morrill about leading up to Thursday.

Was it SM or the Nevada coach that got in trouble here after a WAC tourney game? Either way those two are loose cannons.

I believe it was the Nevada coach. He left for an southeast team...can't remember which one.

It was Mark Fox that went Postal on a cop. He's now at Georgia.

I still think Stew Morrill is the best coach in the WAC but, based on Saturday's events, he should consider returning the Don Haskins COY Award.
The "Bear" would growl and put the fefs in their place but, kept away from opposing players.
He must be rolling around in his grave.

That's almost as sweet as ESPN announcer delighting in playing the video and clear audio from the scorer's table of Steve Alford's post-game hand shake a--hole insult to J. Taveneri of BYU. Maybe Steve learned that word after the Lobos made a FT at the south end in a Pan Am Aggie game. You go, Stew ... you can't take the Baltimore out of JY but where the ___ did you grow up or did you?

PS - I'm changing my name to Jimi becasue Hendrix's 5th album was released yesterday>>>>>

If fat Stew sat on JY, he could cause serious injury.

This SH#$ happens all the time in college basketball. I guess when its against your team then your upset. Coach has to protect his players and if that means telling a nother teams player to go jump in a lake or ill put you in one then so be it. If someone called your wife a Bi$%h i bet you would say something back. What about when Reggie went after Colby Carl with stern words after a foul to Tyrone Nelson. He said he was just going to check on Nelson but if you were there you know he wasn't. Stew Morrill is a great coach you cant argue with the record he has and his team has so many post season championships and tourny bids. This was a great year for him period. He also is a good sport that was mad. Its a business in college sports and it gets heated.
