Fuel to UTEP rivalry

Here is some pieces from a story I wrote on a little Twitter war sparked by Wendell McKines after Eastern New Mexico beat UTEP on Thursday night.

"“#UTEP fans betta go hide in Juarez wen #NMSU slide through they just list to a team we beat by 50 .. That’s disgusting if you ask me”
Later, McKines posted, “#UTEP is a disgrace to the southwest .. They should all go to Juarez and hold up signs that say we hate mexican food”
New Mexico State athletics director McKinley Boston said the school does not have a specific policy regarding athletes and social networking sites.
“I’ve never really taken a position on what they choose to do unless it involves alcohol or drugs,” Boston said. “(McKines) is a senior. He’s a thoughtful person. We don’t have a policy to address his words unless it’s in a derogatory nature. Unfortunately it gives fodder to UTEP, but it’s not a big deal to me.”
UTEP fans have noticed.
In response, UTEP fans started a trending topic called #under10wen on Twitter.
Aggies coach Marvin Menzies declined comment as the Aggies prepare for their season opener on Nov. 12 at Northern Colorado.
“Coach would rather not have Wendell give bulletin board material but he’s a very confident player and I don’t see it as any more,” Boston said.

McKines may be a good bb player but he has nada for brains. Show a little class and act like you've been there before. Nothing good comes out of yakkiin' like a clueless lout.

And if the Aggies lose either of the two games to UTEP, McKines and the rest of the Aggies will be even a bigger disgrace, at least according to know-nothing-at-all McKines.

Thanks a lot, dipwad.

I disagree, 10:28...I think he is funny....it is something that used to be fashionable before people started taking things so seriously...its called HUMOR.

You go, Wen....you're authenticity and playfulness is a breath of fresh air in this world of tired acts!

I remember a few years back after the Aggies beat UTEP in the first game between the two for the year. At the end of the game, the Aggies decided to congregate on (walk all over) the UTEP logo at center court in some kind of display of superiority. The Aggies were a much better team than their southern rivals that year. In the return match, the Miners beat the Aggies in Las Cruces. The disrespect shown to UTEP in El Paso wasn't lost on that Miner team.

I hope Wendall walks the walk, because if the Aggies lose either of the two UTEP games, there will be lots of laughing at his expense.

I don't have an issue with McKines talking a little smack, but the Miners have pretty much owned us in the Menzies era.

It's all good as long as his team backs him up. We need to sweep the Miners.

Go Aggies!!

Humor is good, except when it bites you on the rear. Why not jack up and belittle your rival. Maybe the Miners, who have kicked us up and down the last few years, will get a good laugh.

HUMOR at the expense of your opponent is best left for AFTER the game, not BEFORE.

I think Wen should save this for AFTER we beat them, if that even happens. Personally, I am predicting another 0-4 rivalry record this year. Sorry folks, but were not there yet.

Prove yourself first if you have to make comments about the other team.

Wen is doing nothing more than making this rivalry better. Maybe even selling some seats. I think its fun.

You want to make the rivalry better? You beat a team once, and then you beat them again.

You don't make a rivalry "better" by posting nonsense out on the web. Doing so only shows the level of the maturity and the mentality of the poster.

Here's a prediction: McKines gets himself a technical against the Miners. And don't be surprised if he gets himself ejected.

What will be humor is when NMSU loses to UTEP in El Paso---Now there's some humor for you.

I agree with anon3:52. He has said nothing wrong and if you read any of the miner blogs from the past, his comments towards the Miners are milder than those aimed at the Aggies. The difference is he is an Aggie BB player and is in fact the leader of the team. Whatever his reasons were, he has called out his team to treat the Miner game as the rivalry we have all grown up with. If they win, great. If they lose, then face the consequences. I think it's time for NMSU students and Aggie fans to grow a pair and back Wen and the rest of the team with support. Don't wait until after the games are over to be supportive. Do it up front.

LMAO at all the fat, mad, ugly Minor fans posting on Jason's blog.

Good job Wen, this is what rivalry is all about

Oh, I see. Since some idiots on the Miner blog talks smack about the Aggies, it's okay to talk smack about the Miners? Is that the rationale for doing so?

You want to make the rivalry better, kick some "A" on the court. Until you can do that, and I have yet to see Wendell and the other Aggies do it on a consistent basis, yakkin it up like a grade school boy comes to nothing but making the grade school boy look just that.

Effective smack is walking off with the "W" and that isn't W-endell talk.

It seems like NMS athletes never learn to shut up.

Always talking chit yet not one Aggie program has any sustained, significant achievement outside of the Who Dat Conference.

sells tix at the Haskins.

UTEP will be lucky to hold Wen under 10 rebounds, let alone points.

War UTEP; War UNM

Do all the people that are saying he should have waited till after we play UTEP to start talking smack realize that he did it before we play them because they lost to a team that we beat by 51 points the night before? A team that's not even D1? You talk smack to the your rivals to get everyone fired up, which is exactly what all of these games need, whether it's against UTEP, UNM or any other team we play all season. This is exactly what all Aggie sports need.

I love Wen, he'll back up the talk, just wait and see! everyone should just chill out, it's a RIVALRY, of course there's gonna be a lot of smack talk! get over it already and go to the games!
