Pope's words

Just got off the phone with Herb Pope. This link is a basically his words and will appear in Wednesday's paper as well. It was good to finally get Herb's voice on this issue. I was initially under the impression that we were dealing with a selfish basketball player. After talking to him, it's clear his family business is very real from the few details that he gave me. So just when I thought maybe I had him figured out, it's clear that I don't and I doubt anyone other than his family members will really get a true sense of who Herb Pope is.

I've had some comments on this topic that have been a little too off color. I'm not saying everything has to be positive because I think I've posted pretty much everything, but if you have something negative to say, put some thought into it first rather than just straight up insulting kids, coaches, administrators, whatever. Thank you.

Ok JG, now can we get on with Aggie business.

He's gone, we'll miss him, but we are AGGIES and let's move on.

Stop writing about Pope. You did what you had to do in reporting it all, but now its time to worry about the kids who are committed to our program.

Pope is significant to NMSU, like him or not. Good article, Jason.

It's possible to be both Aggie fans and Herb Pope fans.

Good closure. People around this area who have time to blog know nothing about Aliquipa and growing up the way Herb did. So the negativity is based out of ignorance. Good luck to him, but I think Mckines' return is more important than all of this. Any word on Joyner's eligibility? We need PG play.

First Pope now Keon Lawrence has transferred from Missouri to play at Seton Hall.

Did SH have anyone on scholarship?

Thanks for digging to get the word straight from HP. Teddy had to get that article out with or without a quote. Rusty skills or whatever last year, you could tell Pope was the best athlete on the team at the Crimson/White game where, wearing only street clothes, he participated in the Slam Dunk Contest with McKines. This is why people want to hate him for leaving - as if he just asked for a divorce. And, yeah, if you get a B average you can write your own ticket, in life, as in transfers to Seton Hall. Aggie fans should blame the faculty for not giving Herb tougher exams....
I was glad to see him play half a year and I'm glad he's got a plan for the present and after b-ball. I'm glad you gave him the forum to tell Aggie fans 'thanks' for rockin' the Pan Am last year. It'll be a while before another player with his athleticism comes along.

I thought it was pretty yellow belly of you not to post our comments on Pope!

The kid hosed NMSU around and deserves an earfull. This dead beat dad won't play this year cause he's got to pay child support!

Put our comments or just give up on your out dated and pathetic, homer blog!!

Well I dont know what the heck yellow belly means but If he's dead beat, why is he leaving to try to get get closer to his daughter? And if he doesn't play this year, it will be because the ncaa doesnt grant him a waiver to play right away as a transfer. From your comments, it looks like you might be the homer

Come on, really? Yellow belly means cowardly. But that you were not. People should be respectful of this young man. If they were his age and had all the answers I think they would be a bit more objective.

JG: enough of POPE!

What is going on the world of recruiting with both mens and womens basketball? I know this is an important time of the year for both teams.

Who is visiting, who are we looking at, what positions, how many scholarships, etc...?

I believe coach Spence might have three scholarships to work with as he has a group of new players and young players. How are they doing in recruiting? Coach Menzies is probably in a tough spot with all the young guys and the low APR and loss of scholarships. Where do they sit with all that?

Have you been out to see the teams workout yet? How do we look?

I can't wait for the roundball season of both teams.

JG thanks for showing some class, and moderating the idiots bashing a kid who just wants to raise his own child the right way.

Keep up the good work, love the blog.

I'd bet anything a traceroute on that last poster that used yellow belly would either result in an albukkake ip, or a Reno IP.

I agree with anonymous 9:53am. Pope is using the excuse of his family to leave NMSU. If u people didn't know his girlfriend and daughter lived here initially and moved back due to Pope's infidelity problems.
That kid was a bag of problems. Good luck Seton Hall!

Unfortunately, as fans there was nothing we could do about Herb Pope except watch. And also unfortunately it is hard to tell which of the bloggers on this subject are actually telling the truth. Whatever really happened, we Aggies fans must move on. However, I think there is something that could still be done about this. The Seton Hall coach (with encouragement from Herb himself) should try to play a game in Las Cruces, in appreciation for the tremendous class the NMSU Athletic department and Coach Menzies had in this whole ordeal in releasing Herb Pope.

Yeah, JJ ...if NMSU was going to be compensated by Seton Hall, the Aggies would get a couple of first-round draft picks, a Cal Ripken rookie card, and a minor league pitcher. Too bad all we get is a pity party! Maybe we can see Herb show up in a BracketBuster game vs "the Hall?"
