Postseason

I asked McKinley Boston if NMSU had been approached about playing in one of the fringe tournaments. He said yes, but the Aggies would not participate due to uncertainty regarding potential home attendance.

What a surprise...we can't fill the seats during regular season play. Why would our pathetic fan base show up to watch another "deer in the headlights, Marvin Menzies" extravaganza???

Thank you for not playing in a pay-for-play tourney.

The Miners, famous for paying their way into the CBI tourneys, have yet to host a CBI banner in the Don. That's how proud they are of their participation in the CBI.

Jason,
Instead of asking about post season attendance.

You should have asked Boston about why attendance has dropped since Reggie left and Marvin Menzo took over?

I doubt he would entertain the question but, at least you could ask.

I think everyone knows why attendance has dropped. NMSU fans don't want to show up for games outside of UNM and UTEP. I think if the Aggies win those games, the attendance maintains throughout the course of the season. Boston knows it. Menzies knows it. Players know it. They haven't gotten it done and fans have stopped coming out.

I wouldn't lay the falling attendance strictly on the UNM/UTEP losses. I suspect that losing so many other games early in the preconference season had just as much of a negative impact, especially when you consider the point spread in those games. When a team is getting it's collective tail kicked in venues across the country, the fans aren't going to be too inspired to put down their hard earned cash or give up their couch time.

And just so you don't think the falling attendance is strictly an NMSU phenomenon, attendance has dropped at UNM and UTEP as well. When a city like El Paso, with it's 750,000 people fan base can't average 10,000 a game, that is indicative of something. By percentage, NMSU has a higher attendance per capita than both UNM and UTEP.

Bottom line is win regularly, and the fans will come out. Lose, and you have plenty of nice empty seats to sneak down and into.

3-13 rivalry record has KILLED attendance and I'm glad Boston & Mezies know it.

I doubt it will get better next year.
Utep loses 8 seniors and as long as Menzies is heading this sinking ship...Tim Floyd will find a way to beat us with a bunch of freshmen!
UNM? Steve Alford owns Marvin!

I saw Darin Spence get canned for being competitive and taking the gals to the post season in ages...I expect Menzies to get the axe next year!

Thats a silly response JG. They certainly have shown up in the past for all oponents. Hell people even showed up for Midnight madness back in the day.

That's shortsighted and naive to say the only games people show up for are rivals. People show up to a fun/energetic environment.

I don't see how you could say it's a silly or naive response. The Aggies had St. Mary's at home and Nevada and Utah State in meaningful late season games this season and people didn't show up. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but I was one of the 2000 plus in the arena for all three of those games. It shows that the casual fan loses interest quickly if they lose to their chief rivals or don't have a shiny win loss record.

Jason,
I realize you've been around for a handfull of years now.
One thing you forget is that
Las Cruces knows quality basketball.

From Lou Henson's Amazing Aggies, and Neil McCarthy's hard nose ball, to Reggie Nation.
We know good coaching and good basketball when we see it.

We have not seen good coaching or good basketball since MM came to town.
Pile on an attrocious record vs. our rivals and YES, the PanAm is a ghost town!!

Fans are not buying the Marvin Menzies regime anymore. Hire a competent coach who is charasmatic and exudes confidence bordering on arrogance, and attendance will instantly increase. I agree that wins against UTEP and UNM would also help.

As long as Boston is the AD do not hold hope for a miracle Coach or Coaches to come to NMSU. That goes for all programs. As far as Spence, there goes next season, and who knows how many there after. He is on thru Apr. 30th. There is only a small window of spring signing from Apr.- May. Who is going to want to sign for a ghost Coach? In a ghost town/arena? Boston was completly unprofessional he acted soley on a personal problem. We sure would love to hear his justification for the forced resignation of a successful Coach. One of the few who actually wanted to stay here. Ruined a bunch of lives in the process. What a shame!! Can you get that justification Jason? "If you build it, they will come." It's all falling apart.

Jason, I submit to you that if the Aggies were able to beat just one of those quality teams, the fans would have come back, at least partially. It's the overall suckiness that is keeping fans away not just the rivalry losses.

PJ,
The falling attendance at our rivals and per capita rationale is is an interesting point. Here's another perspective. In the late 70s/early 80s, the PAC probably averaged 7 or 8 thousand, while the student population was 20% smaller than it is now, and the population in Las Cruces was only about 50-60,000.

Ken Hayes was a pretty darn good coach also.

What the hell?! I just read online that Menzies will be getting a multi-year extension and raise? That is f-ing ridiculous. I guarantee you now..I'm done spending my money traveling back to Las Cruces to support the Aggies. Dr. Boston is a mess.

Jason, please say something. Attendance has dropped a lot under Menzies...they can't do anything against their biggest rivals...this is really jacked up.

Boston is a JOKE! when will you people wake up and start punding on the Prez's door about this. He is bad for this area. The only time he will talk to you if if you are writing a check to him. He is robbing all of us of a positive experience. Have you ever seen him walking through the football stadium or basketball arena shaking hands, meeting new people and just getting to know the people who buy the tickets? NOPE! Wake up. He treats our coaches, especially the ones he didn't hire, like CRAP. He talks badly about them right in front of them even at aggie fund raiser events and pre season banquets. What a fool.
we went to all the women's hoops games for the past 12 years. in the last 8 years, this team had energy, had passion and that coach was the reason. he came in here and poured his heart and sould in to that program to raise it up. sure, they needed to win some more games, but did you see the nonconfernce schedule he always put together and how tough it was? he was treated horribly by boston for the past 5 1/2 years and left hanging out in the breeze this year as a lame duck coach. he did it to him three years ago and it killed their recruiting as they had to replace some very good seniors after a 23-9 season. Boston ruined that program, not the coach who is leaving. but then he will give menzies a long extension adn we will continue watching half hearted efforts, bad people on court and bad studetns just being allowed to do whatever they want.
back to that idiot boston. he has lost several of us boosters and it is going to get worse.
