Discussing Marvin Menzies and Sim Bhullar

Rumors ramped up on Wednesday regarding Marvin Menzies potentially leaving Las Cruces for Tulsa and Sim Bhullar bolting for the NBA

Especially Bhullar leaving for the NBA

A source close to the Bhullar family told me Wednesday night that Sim, "Was close to making a decision but has not declared for the NBA Draft"

Is he ready? I would ask those who throw out an automatic no to ask yourself how much closer would Sim get to the NBA by coming back for another year?

He would at least be mentioned in the conversations next year. He has no chance of getting drafted this year. None.

No way is he ready. The NBA needs more than height. Dirk has defined a new role for todays big men. Fast, agile, and accurate shooting. All of which are NOT Sims features today. He has a long way but still has potential.
How about you get us a sweet 16 birth first?????

Why didnt Sim come to the Sun News to break this story?
He should at least have let Jason have the first crack at it. Way to step on all the peeps that have supported you since day 1.

KOB in Albuquerque reported that one of the Pro scouting services has Sim rated as the 3rd best center prospect in the draft. He definitely isn't ready, but if he is projected to be a first round pick, then he is a fool not to go (look at McGary from Michigan). If he gets a 1st round contract or the PROMISED 2nd round contract he is reportedly being offered by Toronto, he has to jump. Thanks Jason for staying on top of the story, you are second to none. Lets keep our fingers crossed Coach Menzies doesn't jump to Tulsa. Unless they are offering a ton of money, why go start all over. Is Coach Menzies really only making $285,000, or is this before tv and incentives? Neal just got a $750,000 contract, open up the vault NMSU, we need to hold on to our coach

Yahoo has a good piece on this being a "not terrible decision" by Sim. Whether the NBA or Europe his window as a pro is limited. Big men have short careers due to injuries, especially in the feet. He should leave now and start making money for him and his family. He also gets access to much better coaching, trainers and nutritionists. Most people here are concerned about the Aggies competitiveness not what is best for Sim. Staying at MNSU is not going to help him more than leaving will. Go young man and good luck!

Sorry but Im not buying the fact that Sim can be competative in the pros now. Hes just too slow and is going to be pushed around by faster bigger guys. Hate to see it end like this.

Too risky of a move but I guess why not try and bank hard. Maybe Sim can kick some of that cash for a new practice facility and court to NMSU.

I really don't get the Bhullar or the Kirk move other than this thing that big men have a short limited shelf life on the feet and legs. It seems the big men of old used to last the longest of all NBA players. There was Walton and Bowie, but there was Kareem, Russell, Cowens and Parish. Certainly have to maximize the dollars, but I do think both would be lottery locks next year. Sim is gonna get a serious look and will be signed, I still hope he waits a year

Great...4 examples of long big men careers? That's your arguement?

Greg Oden
Yao ming
Big Z
Sabonis
Brad Daugherty
Jermaine O’Neal
Ralph Sampson
Rik Smits
Mark Eaton
Shawn Bradley

These are just the big names that had caeer plagued by injuries and had to retire "early". Someone more knowledgeable could probably drastically expand that list. Some many never really had much of a career because of injuries...

Manute Bol
Gheorghe Muresan
Aleksandar Radojević
Todd MacCulloch

That was the argument, YES, next to your scrap heap of injured centers you can add the following healthy centers:
David Robinson-14 years, Moses Malone-21 years, Hakeem Olojuwan 18 years, Nate Thurman 14 years, Shaq Oneal-19 years, Wilt Chamberlain-14 years. The 2013 average NBA career is listed as 6 years. Someone more knowledgeable than you, not hard to find!

Many guys you mention were hurt for substanial portions of their careers. Hakeem, for example, missed over 20 games a year his last 5 years, Shaq on average missed 20 games a season across his entire 19 year career. Wilt, Russell, Thurmon, Kareem - those were different eras all together and not very applicable. Robinson and Parrish (80s/90s) were warriors(especially Parrish) and rare examples of fairly healthy big men. I also believe big men can stick longer in the NBA if somewhat healthy as they can contribute in diminished capacities due to their size. I don't think there is any arguement that a guy as big as Sim has a much higher risk of injury (same with most other big men). The stress on the joints, back and feet is just too much.

Different eras, are you serious? These were guys wearing Chuck Taylors and probably never saw a trainer unless they were hurt. The different eras are negatives to their longevity, a knee injury in those days meant drastic surgery and probably retirement, a back injury meant aspirin, foot pain meant 2 pairs of socks. If you want to reduce their years played by injured games missed, they ALL still exceed the 6 to 8 year average. Shaq got beat up by opposing players, rarely complained, he just kept playing on. Yes they all wore down late in their careers, don't we all. Point is with modern training, modern medical procedures, modern equipment and diet, all these guys have the ability to fight thru injuries before they happen. Sure gravity is most cruel on the big men, but hey if they weren't big men we wouldn't even be talking about them. I wish Sim would've played one more year and landed a guaranteed 1st round deal. I do say that Jason's commentary really puts the conversation into the proper perspective, I just happen to be an Aggie fan first & a Sim fan 2nd.
