Sy cleared for good
As of Monday, Bandja Sy will be cleared to play this season with the Aggies. As you may have read in my last post, international students have to pass two hurdles to be cleared. Sy was cleared earlier this week on the academic piece, and I have received word that as of Monday, he will be cleared as far as amateurism, meaning they take a look at international players to make sure they haven't played professionally. It's a bit a of good news for the Aggies, who are still waiting on BJ West as of Friday and who will open the season without Troy Gillenwater and Wendell McKines. .. Also, in case you were wondering, Gillenwater and McKines can not play in Monday's exhibition game against WNMU or any other game or scrimmage if another team is involved.

I can deal with not seeing Troy or Wen firing a shot in anger before mid-December. What I need to know is are they schooling the rest of these guys in practice as would be expected; i.e., there aren't going to be issues with TG getting enough PT this year, right? Last year the Ags had to play at Reno sans TG due to test of wills with coach. Team pulled together for a BIG statement "W" but Jimmy wants to know that there are not going to be disgruntled players on the bench this year. Team chem turned out good last year. Let's say average 25-26 mins for Troy. Wen should be able to sub in and out as he pleases and call his own number!(jk) JG - if anyone can handle these two guys in practice notify your blog readers at once! Sounds like maybe BJ West can at times?
Finally some good news. I heard Gillenwater has no chance in making up the course work to play. Is there any truth in that or is he on target to become eligible?
We can probably expect TG to be more than just disgruntled if he doesn't get enough PT when and if he gets eligible again. TG tends to be believe he is the best and he EXPECTS that everyone will see that as well and will give him the minutes he deserves.
there seem to be conflicting reports whether Troy is doing what he needs to do academically to be eligible at the end of the semester.
Anon at 7:21. I heard that both Troy, and Wendell are both doing good right now, and both should be eligible. If Gillenwater had no chance to make it up. I don't think he would be at NMSU still.

Wen has to pass 18 hours with a higher GPA. Right, like that will happen. TG has a battle of wills with the coach and thats ok? C'mon people wake up. Train wreck waiting to happen; big time! Can't tell if those two "school" others in practice because they aren't there full time. "Showtime" is headed for "blow up time". Go Lobos!
Anon, I heard from someone close to the program who has always been right. Like I said. If there was no chance for him to be eligible. He wouldn't be at NMSU still.
Anon at 7:36. Wendell McKines needed 18 credit hours to be eligible. He took 6 credit hours in July. He only needs 12 credit hours this semester to be eligible.
I was at practice this afternoon and the last question I asked Menzies was if those two are doing what they need to be doing. He said they are both putting in the work, but upcoming tests etc. will determine if they make the grade. At the end of the day, it's in their hands. I understand why people are interested and their availability is certainly among the top storylines surrounding the team, but the bottom line is that nobody knows until grades come out in December so speculating on if or if not they are on track doesn't really do any good at this point in my humble opinion

I honestly don't know what Troy will be like if and when he returns to the lineup, but I hope he returns in some capacity because he's one of my favorites on the team. Wendell will do whatever he's asked should he return but Troy seems like a guy that is confident in his abilities on the court. I think he's still a team guy but he's one of those guys that has to be involved throughout the course of a game or a season to stay engaged. Both players will likely not instantly join the starting lineup. Menzies has given other guys a chance to step up should a star step out of line in the past and that fact, coupled with the depth in the frontcourt could mean both players have to earn their minutes back. Just taking his size and skill into account, Troy seems like the most likely player on the Aggies roster as it sits today to be able to one day make the jump to the NBA. I also think he knows in order to reach that level, he has to put up numbers as well as develop on the perimeter a little bit so constantly battling the head coach would most likely delay that process....Also Jimmy, BJ hasn't handled anyone as he has yet to be cleared to practice
We need Troy, and Wendell to average 28-30 minutes per game. Troy is a kid who should be playing at some big time program right now. We need him in the game.

Last year the Aggies had a down year and the Lobos still didn't exactly dominate NM State. I don't think it's wise for Lobo fans to come on here and talk smack. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Aggies sweep UNM this season.
