Fred Peete and Justin Hawkins

Justin Hawkins had a workout with the L.A. Clippers on Tuesday. Here is the story.

Like a poster on another blog entry told me, Hawkins was a late invite to the Orlando Pre Draft camp, and he has been busy ever since.Look for a story on Hawkins in Friday's paper.

After talking with Hawkins, he told me that has also worked out with the Kings, Lakers and is scheduled to work out for the Wizards, Bobcats, Raptors and Rockets next week, as well as a potential workout with the Jazz. He said that Reggie Theus was on hand for his workout in Sacramento and that the former NMSU coach showed a lot of interest. The Kings have the 42 and 43 picks.

It's good to see that Hawkins is getting a look. I also talked with Fred Peete, who said that he worked out with the Nets last Thursday and with Orlando on Saturday. Fred said they went through 3 on 3 drills, and shooting drills, but I believe Fred's biggest strengths to be his basketball IQ.

Previous posters have asked about the schedule, which I'm still working on, but here is what we already know

Home and home with UNM and UTEP
At North Texas
At Long Beach State
Two Lou Henson Classic games
A road Bracket buster game

I've heard rumors of a couple of other non-conference opponents but nothing concrete as of yet.

When will the womens hoop schedule be released?

Since you can't tell us the exact teams you heard rumors about can you at least tell us if these teams are recognizable names? Big Time Schools? High Mid Major? MWC? CUSA? Low Mid Major?

Jonathan. One is a big time opponent and the other is a mid major from the west coast.

And to anon at 9:28 p.m., I believe both men and women's schedules should be released by early to mid July from what I've been told. It seems that the women's schedule is closer to be complete than the men.

Mid major from the west coast, huh? Let's start the speculation, just for fun. It is the offseason after all. On the west coast off the top of my head I could see us playing San Diego, San Fran, SDSU, Gonzaga (nah), Pacific (?). Am I close?

Good to see Hawkins is doing well. Hope he makes it. Funny to see him and his Brother in law Freddy Young in the front page of todays paper. =) Goodluck to them both

Why not just say what you heard JG? Otherwise what good is this "blog". I will play along. I heard that the Aggies are going to play Arizona and Gonzaga. My next guess would be Arizona State and the Dons. Just spill it! It was nice to see Hawkins in the paper, too bad all our good players have been transfers. Being a homegrown Las Crucen Fred Young has always seemed like a creep. Too many stories of him running around with underage girls to change that.

I heard the schedule is going to be out soon...Any word from your end?

PS. Do you really need this word verification crap, since you approve all comments anyways?

I agree with most of the posts here that say that rumors is what makes a blog. So the two non-conference games I have heard is 1. a road game at USC and a home game against Pepperdine.

Both of those would be awesome if they panned out. A road game at USC would be tough, but if we could make a good showing and with the connections Menzies has in Cali, I'd say it's a good move.

I think we'd easily win against USC. They lost a bunch of fire power, and are now under NCAA scrutiny. Pepperdine would be cake, IMO, as well.

Jason, any word on when they will be releasing the schedule? Be nice to have something to talk about.

And thanks for getting rid of the word verification!

Both of those games would be a huge step in the right direction for NMSU.

That'd generate some buzz for the upcoming season.

Pepperdine is a bottomfeeder in the WCC, which is really just a top heavy conference (i.e. Gonzaga, San Diego, and St. Marys). We'd smoke them.
