Impressed

I picked the Aggies to split their road trip and they swept it. Just by listening to the game on the radio, very impressed by the continued play of Hamidu Rahman and looking ahead, I believe only La. Tech and Utah State have big men who have a clear cut advantage, but Rahman has held his own thus far.

I think San Jose is a good team and this win says more to me than the Fresno game or the losses on the road at long beach and north texas.

Gibson was good in the second half it sounded like and the Aggies played solid defensively. A sweep at home would be huge, but even a 3-1 start to the season and the Aggies would be in great shape.

This is a very good outcome after not winning any road games prior to this. Lets hope that the fans actuall show up to the next two games and not decide to do someting else. Hamidu is starting to become a better center but there are times when he also looks very weak but hopefully that goes away with time. And I dont know but seems like Gillenwater has slacked off a bit.. I dont see him playing with the intensity or desire that he played in the start of the season and sometimes he simply walks around in the court. I hope he goes back to what he was doing because it worked well. Either way we need wins this week and like JG said 3-1 is not a bad start at all.

Great wins on the road for the Aggies. Mckines continues to dominate and Rahman continues to improve. It's gonna be tough for Utah St. and RENO to win in the Pan Am Center.

JG. Is there any word on why Gillenwater sat the whole 2nd half at SJSU? Was he hurt? Was he in foul trouble? or was he being lazy and Menzies decided to sit him? This is a talented freshman that we need to get on track. With him producing, it makes the Aggies very hard to match up with. Let us in on any info you might have.

I think it's sad that I can find more out about the Aggies in the ALBQ Journal than the Sun-News. I posted earlier about the Gillenwater situation that was left out of the article and blog post. Then I find out from the journal that he was benched for disciplinary reasons. C'mon now.

I agree with JS on Troy Gillenwater. Looking back, he began on FIRE and gave Aggie fans hope that we would be a very good team. Since the beginning of the season however, he has been have less and less of an impact. Seems like he sprinted outta the gate and didn't pace himself. Maybe it's a fatigue issue.

Good call. Having TG unavailable for the second half really made it a different game. Perhaps that's when Gibson had the opportunity to step it up. I've been hoping to see signs of the chemistry gel-ing. Was Troy unhappy with 22 mins vs FS? Yikes. Scarey to think he might become a head case just when everything was falling into place with the rotation and point production. It happens on every team except those rare cases where things 'click.'

Coach Menzies declined to comment on why Troy sat in the second half, saying he, "was going to keep it in-house." I asked him if he would be further punished and he said everything was status quo moving forward so i would expect to see him back on the court on thursday, but perhaps still in the doghouse

Thanks, JG. Let hope he bucks up like a man, like maybe a Donavan McNabb when he got benched? Troy can't be expected to be as mature but let's hope.
Wendell got two And-one's last night if I'm not mistaken. I wish they kept a stat on how many 'old-fashioned' 3-pt plays a player makes.

Yeah, good WAC start. I clearly remember last year's first game was on the road in Moscow. Game was back and forth until NMSU pulled away late and won by 10. Later we crushed the Vandals at home. They have some seriously good athletes though, and the way they they stood up to Nev. and UTags on the road is setting off alarm bells. This year the Vandals come to Pan Am first, a week after Thurs nite's Nevada game. So 3 tough home games in a row coming up. Yee-hawwwww!

McKines and Joyner were 3 for 3 from downtown last night (SJSU).
Rest of team shot 23% from long range (JY hit one JG hit 2).
It just goes to show how you can’t count on the 3 every night. I think Menzies uses it right; to pull the D out to the perimeter a little and open up the inside game. That said, I wish Laroche would have hoisted the 3 to try and beat the Lobos with 10 secs to go or driven in more to initiate contact and draw a foul. But on the imbound pass with 3 sec to go, I was real happy to see JY looking off all the options before going with the alley-oop over Faris to Rahman to try to tie the game. It showed that the Aggies have practiced for that situation. Too bad the outcome wasn’t a tie and an OT win. Oh, well. Lobos had a tough 2-pt road loss to UNLV and face UTEP tonight in the Pit. Hard to know who to root against more.

Ouch! UTEP 5 of 18 from outside the arc last night and UNM 5 of 21 including oh-of-8 in the first half when they counted.
These are two excellent shooting teams. That's why I'm glad to see Menzies shooting the three with a purpose.

Aside from UNM's five threes, they only made 10 shots from the floor in the Pit. Yikes! Alford probably wants to quit to hang out with Bobby Knight. Alford can probably still out shoot Toppert. Best pure shooter I ever saw.

In Indiana, I think the line goes... "best pure shooter you ever seen."
