Gibson and early entry

NMSU senior to be guard Jonathan Gibson is on the list of early entries for the NBA draft. Here is Teddy's story on it and following is the list, which includes a few WAC guys. Aggie OO7 is correct on a previous post that Gibson has nothing to lose by getting an evaluation. Marcelus Kemp did it before his senior year. I think there are a couple other guys on the Aggies who maybe have a better chance down the line, but it will be good for him to get some feedback

Does this sound familiar?

On a previous post, someone asked me what I thought about the situation at Nevada. I think it sounds a lot like the Herb Pope situation last offseason at NMSU. And then I read this Q and A on Parsing the WAC and it made me think back to when I spoke with Herb. The only difference I would say is the two players are vastly different. Herb was a program changing player who was granted his release. Cooke is a role player so I don't understand the difficulty unless there are APR concerns in Reno. Speaking of APR, it's going to be released on May 6. It will be interesting to see if the men's basketball team gets its scholarship back as Boston had hoped.

Nevada freshman booted

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Nevada basketball coach David Carter has dismissed freshman forward Ahyaro Phillips from the team after he was arrested this week for alleged possession of a dangerous weapon on school property.
It marks the second time Phillips has been arrested in less than a year. He was suspended for several weeks at the start of the season in October when he and two other Wolf Pack players were charged with shoplifting at a sporting goods store in Sparks.
Carter said in a statement Friday the 6-foot-8 forward from New Orleans was given a second chance to follow team rules but unfortunately failed.
Phillips averaged about 2 points and 2.7 rebounds per game while averaging playing 9 minutes a game this past season.

Signing period

The regular signing period begins on Wednesday and runs through May 20. Don't expect anything soon. I talked to Coach Menzies on Tuesday. I get the feeling that the center and power forward are shoe ins, but he said he is going to take his time with the third scholly, most likely a guard but as he said before, they could hold it or give it to Tyrone Watson. Stay tuned

Oakland guard

Here is a story that I wrote on Bay Area guard Justin Standley, who does not have an offer from NMSU but is certainly high on the Aggies' radar but he's part of a class that seems to be more about developing some depth and role players than bringing in guys that will come in and play big minutes.

Thanks to my main man Kevin McCarthy, here are a couple links on Standley and this one.

As for the schedule, what do you think about the non-conference schedule. I think the students should be happy that the rivalry games come when students are in school.

Sorry, but read this

I apologize for the lack of posts, but each time I thought perhaps the Aggies were interested in someone, that player committed. The two occasions recently were Michael Williams from Taft in L.A. and the other was Shannon Sharpe, another combo guard from Centennial High in L.A. Sharpe graduated last year and went to Laurinberg Prep but never played there and he committed to Colorado last week.

The Aggies have three scholarships to give, according to Coach Menzies. The Aggies have offers out to a center and power forward (if you remember a certain big man from Africa) and one out to a combo guard and there is also another guard the Aggies are interested in from the west coast.

This of course means that Terrance Joyner was issued his release, which shouldn't come as a surprise but the story will be online later this evening and I'll put a link up. Also included in that story will be a note concerning Assistant to the Head Coach John McMullen, who will be mulling over retirement this summer. Menzies said if McMullen does leave, he will not be replaced.
