No CBI

The NIT selection is still a couple hours away, but I spoke with McKinley Boston who said the Aggies declined the invitation from the CBI today. The reason is the same as last year, a 60,000 fee to host a game and the fact that Aggies players were gone for a week and a half, that would have been the only way Boston was willing to play in the CBI. He also said he wasn't interested in the new CollegeInsider tournament

Fire Boston! How will we ever improve with this Boston guy after all his judgement is a major question.

What has he really done since he has been the AD- no one in the stands if that does not tell you anything.

Fire Anon 5:14 for failure to use common sense. $60,000 to host a game in a Mickey Mouse tourney. Then we have to pay event staff to run the entire thing. You think money is made on trees?

Good call Dr. Mac!

I would rather see us use the $60K to recruit a JUCO big man (the next Hatila Pasos)to help shore up a non-existent post game!!

I would also use this money to send Menzies and his staff to Rebounding and Defensive coaching camps around the country!!

Tournaments are for deserving teams. The Aggies aren't even in the top 100, and were shunned by the NCAA and the second tier tournament, the NIT.

The CBI are a "table scraps" tourney. The Aggies don't belong there.

JG what are your thoughts on the season as a whole, the WAC Tournament and expectations for next season?

My response would be why put good money into bad. Menzies and his questionable cast of misfit "coaches" would have to be intelligent enough to learn something at school. Menzies' "plan" for the season was to finish 17-15, lose by 1 point in the WAC semifinals after blowing a 13-point halftime lead, losing three out of four to the rivals and the top two teams in the WAC, and have a player show just as much stupidity in getting caught with marijuana at the airport.

A better use of the money would be to give every season ticket holder a rebate for putting up with this farse.

Boston SHOULD GO TOO because he was the blithering IDIOT for hiring Menzies -- and for that matter Mumme, rehiring Rocky Ward as alleged baseball coach and Darren Spence as the just-as-questionable coach of the women's basketball team. How much DEEPER IN DEBT has Boston put the NMSU athletic department into. How much has he alienated fans with micromanaging fan behavior at Aggie basketball games and premium seating requirements.

Why put good money into bad. That's a question a lot of people will continue to ask themselves as Aggie basketball and NMSU athletics continues this incredibly ignorant manner.

Can 60 grand find us an AD who doesn't talk out of BOTH sides of his mouth? He knew the rules going in-so why is he trying to pull one over on us-does he REALLY think that we Aggies are THAT naive? If you're not planning to commit to anything, then PLEASE keep that to yourself-that's as kind as I can put it!!

GS, here is a column I wrote on the Aggies season that ran on Sunday. Don't know if you saw it yet. But I will be handing out some grades for the season online in the next couple of days.

Who wants to coach for NMSU?
answer these three quewstions correctly and just maybe Boston may hire you

1. In the last 2 min. of a game whoe would you inbounds the ball to
a. Herst
b. Gibson
c. Young

2. If your playing against the player of the year and he is a center thats 270lb and 6'9 and its less than 1 min. to play who would you want to guard him?

a. 6'6 Wendall
b. 7'0 & 230 Hamadu
c. 6'1 Herst

3. 6 seconds left and your playing against for the most part a stationary team that lacks a penatrator what defense would you play

a. 2-3 zone
b man to man
c 1-3-1 zone

here are your answers in order
c,b,b

If you have correctly answered these questions you can turn in an application to Boston and just maybe you can become the next coach @ NMSU.

Menzies made some bad coaching moves, GOrdo is my hometown boy but with the game and season on the line I dont want him in the game to guard anyone. to shoot a three YES!

here is the strategy for next year. Screen and roll with troy and any guard, and play uptempo, but you must teach these kids man to man principles. we play too much zone, Our guards together are tops in the conference. and troy alone is the most versitle player in the conference (well George from F st may have something to say about that).

Coach Menzies play uptempo! so we can get excited about Aggies b-ball. Reggie was a star so we came just for him.

We can be Kansas of the WAC if we can get these kids to believe in you.

and can we stop saying we have a bright future! its annoying, Win today period! NMSU have lost so much money since Reggie has left. We need NMSU as our strong tax base.

from NMSU die hard fan

Whats really annoying is people who have no idea what they are talking about giving us a thesis that gives us fans that are realistic (and yet still positive) a headache.

Talk about Reggie Theus, like the rant from 'die hard NMSU fan' above, always reminds me of the Simpsons episode where the slick-talking snake-oil salesman convinces Sprinfield politicos to purchase a used monorail.

Pitino just said on Sunday after winning the Big East and maybe the top seed of the four No. 1's, "Hey, the players do the playing in the games and deserve the credit; the coach's role is to tell them what they can expect to see the opposition throw at them." (basically, I'm paraphrasing)

I wonder if given the success utep has had in the cbi if more aggie fans dont wish they would have paid to play in the cbi? Granted nothing is a given and NMSU would have still had to play the games, but utep is in the final 4 of the cbi. I know, it's the cbi but that's still a pretty good accomplishment. I was not in favor of paying to play, but for a young team any time on the court together cant hurt, plus it gives you more practice time etc. Just a thought, maybe another post from JG can start a dialogue on this.
