Gillenwater

Some have said that if any players would leave the men's team, it would be Troy Gillenwater. I even learned to temper my expectations with this program until the season is underway, but I talked to Troy for a story for later in the week and asked him if he was going anywhere. He said he wasn't and that he was taking a summer session so he was going to be in Las Cruces for the next few months and he talked about how important the next couple months are for the team getting ready for next year. Take it for what it's worth, but I see it as a sign that over the last few weeks of the season, the team's chemistry finally got sorted out and that the key players figure to remain.

Great post JG. Thats a big sigh of relief.

That is big news. NMSU should be the favorites to win the league next season. Nevada still needs to find a true center, and they also need to start working on their shooting. NMSU wasn't a great defensive team last year, and NMSu did really good against them. NMSU will be a good defensive team next season. Utah State was carried by Wilkinson. Utah State might start Brady Jardine 6'7 at the post in place of Wilkinson.

Gillenwater would be a fool to leave this team. Same goes for JY and Wen. They have too much potential in the next two years for them pass up on each other. The only reason I would see any of them leaving is because of Menzies. This team will be amazing in two years when they are juniors and seniors so I dont see why they would leave. Its good news that Gillenwater is staying and as long as he works on defense I think he will be a great player

The last three games (Hawaii, Boise and Utah) of the season showed some REAL good chemistry and defensive improvement!

It's good to hear Gillenwateris staying because, the kid can flat out PLAY!!
I hope the team see's what I saw the last three games and stays put.
If everyone comes back, improves in their weakness (defense & rebounding) and plays team ball....we will be in the big dance a year from now!!

It's just too bad that we don't a coach who will not be intimidated by 18-20ish spoiled brat freshmen.THEN we would be a force to contend with...

I think Gillenwater knows how good this team has the potential to be in the next three years with him on the court. Honestly, if you look at what our local competition (UTEP and UNM) has in the way of players coming back, the Aggies are way ahead. There is no reason why the Aggies can't sweep the Lobos and Miners for the next few years with the returnees if the players all return and make grades.

Didn't Herb Pope say a couple times last Spring that he was coming back??? Buhleave-it-when-you-see-it

Nancy, I was thinking the same thing. What about Joyner, will he be back?

I still feel that Nevada is next year's favorite. They've got 2 6'10" kids coming in to shore up their post issue, and like us, aren't losing anything of consequence. I do believe that we could win the title next year as this core gets more reps together.

Nancy and Anon 7:11 - just use some common sense before dribbling your unconscious brain onto the keyboard for the rest of us to read. You don't want an attitude like Pope's on the team, yet you blame Menzies for being intimdated by a freshman demanding playing time? Pick one stance or the other and then back it up in your posts. Gillenwater saw how Herb's bluff played out. Troy now sees how he can dominate in a leauge like the WAC if he stays. Now there's a revenge motive, too, since they fouled him out of Friday's game in only 17 mins when he was 6 of 7 and grabbing boards. You want Menzies to have credit for that or just the negative complaints?

This is my problem with Menzies opponents. You blame him for everything bad, and he gets credit for none of the good from your ilk. You can't eat your cake and have it too.

Justine. Do your research. Nevada has a 6'10, and 6'8 freshman kids coming in. I don't believe the 6'10 kid will make any impact, because he is very similar to Chris Gabriel. How can you say Nevada is the favorite when they still have a bunch of question marks. NMSU doesn't have any anymore. NMSU is the favorite.

Dribbling my unconscious brain onto the keyboard?? LMAO!!! That is too funny.
Please stop with the blind loyalty and going in-depth with Mr. Pope. All I am saying is kids say the darndest things, and Gillenwater sure acts like a kid at certain times. He very well may transfer; however, if he comes back that will be great news. Your narrow-minded optimism is pitiful.

Menzies puts his pants on one leg at a time, just like Steve Alford. They (coaches) are all mortal. Look at Henson, a great guy and a great coach and he still had critics in Illinois after taking a team of guard/forwards to the Final Four. Alford is great, got coach of the year in MWC, but he still couldn't go out and shoot Toppert's 3-balls for him. If he could, the Lobos would be dancing right now. Don't demand that Menzies win games for the Aggies people! This isn't Champaign, Illinois and it's not even Albuquerque. Try to keep some perspective before jumping on Menzies constantly! The days of a red-faced, yelling disciplinarian for a coach are just about gone from sports in general. Thanks JG for keeping it real ...

Anon at 2:17. I apologize. You bring up a good point and I agree with you that times have changed. Currently I'm on vacation so I will return to the blog next week when i get back.

No, worries, J.G.
Enjoy a deserved break and a refreshing chance to expand your horizons beyond the small-town coach bashing back here.
The b-ball blog wouldn't be any fun without militant anti-Menzies folks. (jimmy)

J.Groves, where you been?????? I need some Aggie basketball talk! I thought there'd def. be a post about Wendell McKines and his getting into a bit of trouble; damaging his baby's mommma's car in a fit of anger. It was IN THE SUN NEWS a week or so ago, but nothing in the sports section. What's the deal.
Also, where's the talk about Marvin Menzies possibly bolting to take a position at a bigger school? Xaxier? Memphis? Wash. State? I here Xavier is looking at Menzies ...
(of course, I am not serious).

hey aggie 007...
Actually menzies was contacted and refused to speak with two schools, USC when they thought Floyd was leaving(they loved him when he was there) and Xavier's search firm did call menzies as well. Both were never reported on because of Menzies desire to build something special. The USC conversation was on their blog posted by someone in the athletic department. Would you like Menzies to leave?
