Oakland guard

Here is a story that I wrote on Bay Area guard Justin Standley, who does not have an offer from NMSU but is certainly high on the Aggies' radar but he's part of a class that seems to be more about developing some depth and role players than bringing in guys that will come in and play big minutes.

Thanks to my main man Kevin McCarthy, here are a couple links on Standley and this one.

As for the schedule, what do you think about the non-conference schedule. I think the students should be happy that the rivalry games come when students are in school.

Wow--plenty of positives by the evaluators and more importantly coaches. Sounds like a STUDENT athlete that would be a good fit with what Menzies is trying to put together. A real program builder. I mean...do you think Tyrone Nelson ever had an inclination to major in architectural engineering? Doubtful. Plus he has good size for a point, and it sounds like he doesn't need attention or shots. I don't know how talented he is, but I hope this works out for NMSU.

The schedule sounds great. I hope the game against unm is able to get worked into the espn broadcast, that would be amazing. I wish that the TT game would be an actual home and home or even a alternating series like it was a few years ago, instead of a preseason. Hopefully the Lou Henson Classic can bring in some good teams as well.

Ok, if we haven't offered him a scholly yet, and he's pretty much begging to come play here (which I'm sure "the campus is so nice" is not his reason), then how good can he actually be? What I want to know is, "Who else is recruiting him?" and I hope the coaches really do their homework on him because alot of kids dream of playing D-I ball, but, how can I put this, they are no Jahmar Young - more like Chris Cole.
As a fan, I'd be more excited about going after some really good talent and competing against, at least, Nevada and Utah State. If we sign him because there's more playing time available or he really gelled with the coaches, then that's great. If he pleads to be signed and nobody else is really offering him a scholly??? Thats a red flag. No thanks.

If we're going to have any tournaments here, let's not do what utep is in the habit of doing, inviting three cupcakes, and then losing to one of them. Get some good teams in where wins mean something and losses don't do as much damage to the Aggie post season chances.

Aggie007, Hernst Laroche didn't have any other offers, and look how he turned out. Just because he has no other offers doesn't mean he isn't good. Wake up dude. Get a freaking clue.

I'm glad 007 isn't in charge of recruiting. He only looks at the ratings. Standley could, and may, add depth and the PG position, and be a valuable role players.

FWIW, he's being recruited by Fresno, San Fran, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's, North Arizona, and Pacific according to rivals.com. Also you don't offer kids official visits if you aren't serious about them.

Unless you believe that Laroche's consistent performance last year was a season-long fluke, there are about 8-10 minutes of relief time available at the PG position for the next 3 years.

We won't get an amazing 6'3" super athlete in here to cover that.

What we can get, and hopefully will in Standley is someone who will be comfortable with a bench role, play really hard for his 8-10 minutes, continue to run the offense, and maybe knock down an open jumper or two.

I'm from the Bay Area and Standley is a player and would be a great addition for the Aggies. Great kid too! Will play his ass off for you. Standley played for the same high school coach as Wendell when he was at Amador Valley. Not sure how accurate the offer situation is but I'm hearing he is heading to Las Cruces next season.

Nice to have someone come here and vouch for the kid.

I think we should wait until next season, and offer Marcus Williams. He was a Honable Mention JUCO All American as a freshman after averaging over 17 ppg.

I know this is not a very feasible idea but still. We have the Lou Henson Classic and I was thinking how great it would be if it could be played betwen us and Illinois. Every year we bring teams that mean little to what Coach Henson did and the crowds are never big on it. I think it we want to honor what he did it would be great if the two schools were he reached great heights would play each other every year and call that the Lou Henson Classic. Just a thought

It sounds to me like Justin would be a great addition to our team. All year long, people stated how talented we were, but we still struggled. Perhaps a player like Standley is what we need to supplement our talent: someone that is willing to check his ego at the door and provide leadership and quality minutes. From what 10 yr. vet said, it looks like Standley not only has great leadership abilities, but can flat out ball, too. I'll take it.
