Starters tonight

Just a reminder that Wendell McKines will not play tonight for a "violation of team rules" due to academic responsibilities. It's apparent that Coach Menzies is holding his young team to a high standard of responsibility early on.

Looking ahead, I like Wendell's spark coming off the bench, with Troy Gillenwater starting at the power forward spot. Every team needs a guy to come off the bench with energy and Wendell does all of the little things. I think Gillenwater has the offensive edge over Wendell right now, and that should lead to the starting spot for the redshirt freshman. At any rate, Menzies told me Gillenwater will start tonight, along with Hernst Laroche, Jonathan Gibson, Jahmar Young and Hamidu Rahman.

We need both Wendell, and Troy starting, so I have no idea what you are thinking.

No we don't. Wendell is best off the bench; for the team. He will get plenty of mins off the bench.

Our centers are so weak around the paint. Gabriel looked lost and did not do much on the offensive or defensive side. Hamidu got on a little roll at the end of the game but this area is going to affect us. I think that we should be fine with Gibson, Young, McKines, and Gillenwater but it seemes that whenever they were not in (well McKines didnt play) the tempo slowed down a lot. Gibson seems to have much more confidence and Gillenwater didnt really look like he was playing his second college game. I dont think that we need LaRoche as the starting point guard since Gibson can run that and I think he is better anyway. However, it might keep his ego in check as well since this is his team and well its good to not let him get a big head. I think they can definetely improve on some areas and be ready for next week. Go Aggies

I feel we should start Laroche, Gibson, Young, McKines, and Gillenwater. I think we should have Rahman, and Gabriel come off the bench, because we need both Gillenwater, and McKines in the game.

JG: do a little something on the $60 million renovation up at The Pit why don't you. How in the world do we expect to keep up with UNM. We had a hard time doing a $23 million project and got a shrunken down practice gym, a nice new office area and new freaking bathrooms in the arena. We did nothing to the inside of the arena where we actually sit to watch the game or even the court where the players play.

It keeps getting tougher for us.

Why do we NEED both of them in the game (TG and Big Wen)?

To anon 4:04, the PAC is a very nice facility. And who the F cares about the dirty loobs.

I agree w/ Anon 2:30 pm. Our big men are real inexperienced, and Troy is playing like a soph or Jr already. Troy gives us offensive. Wen give us rebounding and the spectular around the basket offensive and his outside shot is better than last year. Hernst handles the ball under pressure well and that frees up Gib and JY for their shots. We will have to play the bigs enough to give them experience for later on.

A strong starting line up is key ladies and gents, but whats important is who is in at the end of the game. I have a feeling that its gonna be tough to keep Wendell and Troy off the court when it's crunch time. These guys are too talented to be on the bench.

Lobos can build "the greatest college basketball arena" in the country if Danny Granger wants UNM to blow his $5 millions. But still the greatest moments in the Pit were Lorenzo Charles' dunk off Sidney Lowe's "assist," Valvano's reaction to that dunk, and then also the game when the Aggies came back from big deficits inside of a minute in regulation and then again inside a minute left in OT (in like 1990 or '91?)! Plus there had to be a couple of huge high school championship finishes in there. The Lobos can brag that Lute Olson refused to bring AZ in there again, but that's about it for Lobos history. Point is, they already have the best arena in college hoops and it doesn't help UNM recruit. Jimmy likes the teams that stayed in the WAC compared to the ones that split for the Mtn. West. Wish we could trade UNLV for Reno. Jimmy's glad the Aggies slipped into the WAC behind the Lobos, but Jimmy is sentimental for the Big West and ESPN "Big Mondays" against the likes of then #1 UNLV (with Tarkanian, Augmon, Greg Anthony, Larry Johnson). Given that history, UNM can't hold some of these Aggies boosters back ...

Jimmy... That Aggie comeback in the pit years ago was great. Skip McCoy and Lance Jackson hit huge threes late in that game. Also, Thomas Wyatt took a charge on an inbounds play which proved to be crucial. Ill never forget that. David Hovey also had one of the most memorable moments in the Pit when he scored 39 to bring Cruces high back from a 29 point deficit against Hobbs in the 97 state tournament. Lobo memories? Cant think of any.

A buddy of mine was at the Pit(wearing crimson and/or white) that night. He said he'd never seen anything like it in sports. Maybe Reggie Miller a few years later wiping the smile off Spike Lee's face draining 3's vs the Knicks would be a comparison, but not from how I remember Chris' game description... I'm glad that anon 7:07 can recall those names because I couldn't come close.
