Marvin Menzies said on Tuesday that freshman point guard Da'Shawn Gomez will not be with the team next season, opening up another scholarship. Gomez appeared in seven games for a total of 57 minutes. Menzies said the Aggies are recruiting combo guards and another post player
With the graduation of Jonathan Gibson and the departure of Gomez, Menzies said he is recruiting like the Aggies have two scholarships to fill.
6-10 center Tshilidzi Nephawe will likely receive Gibson's scholarship and if you recall in my story about Gillenwater's return, Troy Gillenwater has paid his own way this year. Menzies said he plans to give one back to Gillenwater, leaving the Aggies with one as far as I can tell and that is all based on an assumption that the Aggies will get their scholarship back from APR this spring.

Any word about Justin Standley? He's no longer on the official roster.
Gillenwater is ineligible, plays one month and gets another scholarship?
Only at NMSU does this happen!
And you wonder why this team is so undisciplined, heck it starts at the top.
We have to wait and see if the Gomez departure affects the APR. Let's hope not, we've had way to many players leave in the past few years. We need to recruit kids who know their role and can accept being 3-4 on the bench.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe the Gomez situation has anything to do with playing time. It has everything to do with health. The Standley situation, I'm not so sure about.
GO AGGIES!!!
Is there no story about Gomez leaving? If you talked to MM, why did he give no details. If he did, why did you not write a story about it?
I hope Tshilidzi Nephawe can do better than his stats indicate because those scholarships are precious. He seems like a huge risk with very little basketball skills coming in.
Any word on why Gomez is leaving?
How it affects our APR?
What's the deal with Mahktar Diop, and Justin Standley.
Do you like Cheezey Poofs?
My understanding is that Gomez has a medical issue. If so, his departure will not hurt NMSU's APR. Standley was not on scholarship...status for next year unknown.
I am an NMSU Grad living in Albuquerque. I am constantly surrounded with Lobo headlines. It kills me that the good headline are going to them. ...Academically ineligible players (regardless of reason), players not returning, another prospect player signed, APR etc... whatever the headline it just seems like NMSU is on the decline while University Near Mom is on the incline. What is the major difference? Why can't NMSU get it done the same way? Can some one please let me know.
Gomez did or does have a legit eye problem. I remember during the Pepperdine trip he didn't dress for one of those games for disciplinary reasons and he hasn't been back since. I think it was another instance where Menzies is trying to get rid of players who don't fall in line ie Joyner, Higgins...Unless it's truly medical, my understanding of the APR, Gomez would count 1 for 2 against the Aggies if he was eligible when he left (I'm not sure where he has landed if indeed he has). I was surprised when Menzies said he would not be returning. I didn't know it had gone that far.
Justin Standley was not on scholarship, which is part of the reason he opted to leave Las Cruces. I talked with him lastnight. He said he has a scholarship and is sitting out this year at Western Nebraska Community College.
Standley said he couldn't get through the Clearinghouse while at NMSU and had to pay his own way, which was getting too expensive. To make matters worse, he couldn't practice. He is currently practicing and says he will play there next year with the hope of returning to NMSU the following season.
"I didn't fall out or anything and I still talk to Marvin a lot," he said.
Standley said that he had a relationship with first-year coach Russ Beck, who was recruiting one of Standley's teamates from Oakland while Beck was an assistant at College of Southern Idaho.
As for Diop, he would have never seen the court and wasn't a scholarship player.
Talked to Diop and Ndoye the other day. Diop said that he was injured and thats why he wasnt playing this season but was waiting to see if he got better for next season. Didnt seem too interested in coming back. Gomez has been planning on leaving for a while now from what I have heard. Wasnt anything relating to discpline but rather his medical issue pushed him to just want to go home after not playin this season. Jason, can we expect to have a freshman guard starting in place of Gibson next season? Or what do you think the lineup will look like with Patton and Gordo as the only two other guards really available
Gsus
Thanks Groves, you're the best beat writer in the WAC.
The Athletic Dept. complains about people not showing up to the games but, Menzies is strictly to blame.
How may players have transffered since he arrived?
Herb Pope, JD Luster, Higgins, Joyner, McKines (came back), Gabriel, Standley, Gomez and Diop.
Did I get them all?
Then you get kids that are ineligible and pretty soon, fans don't have a team to identify with because your not sure if they will be around next semester!!
This turnover has got to stop or else womes attendance will be bigger than the mens.
Jefe
Gsus, I think Gordo could start next year....I haven't seen Patton play and he can't practice this season so I really don't know what he brings to the table. I think a combo guard is the highest priority right now. Even if it means going with a JC player if Menzies can find the right fit as a stopgap. Hopefully Sy improves dramatically in the offseason because athletically, he could play the 3 and let JY move to his natural position at the shooting guard spot. Either way, with the three bigs on the roster, I wonder if the Aggies will be more interior oriented next year
I think we will be more interior oriented, and run Wen at the 3 with JY at his natural spot, the 2.
Wen/Gillenwater/Ham across the front with N'Doye and West off the bench kind of reminds me of the Hawkins/Passos/Nelson NCAA team.
You missed DeAngelo Jones and Londale Theus, el Jefe.
Groves, next year the starting five will be Laroche, Young, McKines, Gillenwater, and Rahman. We can't start Gordo because right now we only have 3 guards. Plus, there is no way we can have Gillenwater coming off the bench. Gillenwater will be an All-WAC player next year.
Anon at 12:46, You're probably right. But there is no doubt your lineup is the most talented, just like this year the most talented lineup is when Hernst, Gibson, Young, McKines and Troy are on the floor together but the only time we really see that lineup is in winning time when it matters most.
I think that lineup will be tough on Young though with no other perimeter threat that can consistently knock down the 3 but JB had a good comparison with Hawk, Nelson and Passos.
I think talking about next year is a good thing. This year is toast.
I heard thru the grapevine that there is a kid in Canada that they are interested in, and if they can get him their problems at guard will be answered.
I heard thru the grapevine that there is a kid in United States that they are interested in, and if they can get him their problems at guard will be answered.
Don't post dumb things like this if you don't have solid information.

NM State fans are such jerks to each other...really bad attitudes...that's why the programs at UTEP and UNM are doing so much better. I grew up in Las Cruces but I don't spend the money to support NM State anymore because of some of the crappy things people on here say.
People like kg should just shut it.

The information that I provided is very accurate. You'll see a month from now
