Interesting links

Darin Spence had a highly touted guard in town over the weekend on her first of three official visits she's taking. Spokane, Wash. product Jazmine Redmon has whittled her list down to NMSU, Oregon and Gonzaga. The Aggies have a bunch of guards, but you can never have too many, considering Crystal Boyd is a senior and Madison Spence and Danisha Corbett are juniors. ... Jahmar Young's name showed up again in an off-court incident, which is too bad. I ran into Jahmar earlier this summer and he seemed focused on the upcoming season. I still expect him to have a big year and apparently others do as well. And check out the WAC players in the first round of the next Draft, although I'm not sold on either George or Babbitt even though both have NBA bodies.

I'll be very blunt. I'm a gay, masculine male and if Jahmar Young called me a "fag" I'd kick his *ss. I'm sick of people who make derrogatory remarks like that. Not all gay men are wimps like he probably assumes. He should be kicked off the team. I went to NM State when I was younger and hate like his was never tolerated back then. I'm sure he wouldn't like it very much if I called him the "N" word (which I wouldn't do because I was raised with respect). I'm very disappointed.

Sooner or later, JY is going to need to learn basic manners and how to conduct himself in a mature fashion. I wasn't anywhere close to where this incident happened, but I bet I can tell you what happened. JY begins by being disrespectful & loud. When somebody from the Aramark staff comes by to ask him to quite down or leave, he feels disrespected, so he disrespects that man by calling him "fag". JY said "the next thing that comes is a punch." WTF JY? What are you thinking?

"Fag" is a derrogatory remark and it is not ok to call people that.

JY has already attempted to sexual assault a woman and now this. He needs to go.

Laugh all you want Anon 6:48 AM...I dare you to laugh in my face coward.

BFD is my response to the entirety of this whole situation.

@ ANON 8:16. If you read my post carefully, it says "good stuff". I thought what you said about "kicking his *ss" was hilarious. Chill out man. Stop being so defensive. "I dare you to laugh in my face coward"? C'mon man, this is a blog. LOL!

Sorry Anon 7:44 AM..lol. I was just upset that people there would condone JY's behavior. I didn't read your comment correctly.

Sorry Anon 2:41 pm: "I don't get why everyone judges Young"

I am sure we don't know the whole story and maybe JY was provoked but at the end of the day it doesn't matter. The Taos employee's name was not in the paper, his reputation is not called into question. Jy's is. He has previous issues and incidents working against him and it is simply not a smart move for him to be involved in new incidents.

WE judge JY because he is not just another student. he is a basketball player. Playing for NMSU is not his right, it's a privilege and it is time JY and the rest of the team realize this. If this was an incident involving any other NMSU student in Taos, it would not have made the news. But as a student-athlete Jamar needs to understand that together with the privilege to play on the team comes the responsibility to conduct himself in a professional manner on and off the court. At the end of the day he represents NMSU. That's why we judge him and will continue to do so.

This has always been an issue for NMSU basketball. We've always had inner-city thugs that know only two things. Survival and basketball. Stop acting surprised about JY's behavior. This problem runs deeper than basketball. This wouldn't even make the papers if Jahmar was playing at a school in New York City or Baltimore. At least he didn't attack him, or expose himself. lol

what I find interesting about this conversation is that the comments are a 'response' to a totally unrelated blog entry. In other words, we just had to talk about the JY issue and found the most convenient forum.

It is hard to grow up in public (look at Michael Jackson). I hope his public lashing teaches him some manners!

btw how is the weather over there in cruces???

please disregard my previous post...I somehow missed the JY allusion!

Finally, I have something interesting to add on the whole JY thing...and I didn't even write it! This was written in the round-up:

The Round Up > Opinion
Letter: 'I hope Jahmar Young receives more than a slap on the wrist'

To the editor:

An online report, posted on Sunday by the Las Cruces Sun-News, stated that, after being asked to leave from a student union eatery for disorderly conduct, an NMSU basketball player, Jahmar Young, called an NMSU employee a “fag.”

Mr. Young’s words hurt deeper than he may know. While living in Garcia Hall in 2001, my friend and I were victims of a vicious hate crime. After assaulting me, the assailants went back to my friend’s room and beat him, all while calling him a faggot. It is a word as derisive and demeaning as any racial slur, and uttered by bigots. As communities that pride themselves on diversity of all types, Las Cruces and NMSU should not abide by his callous remarks.

Mr. Young said that the employee was a “fag” that hid behind the police. In a law-abiding society, legal action should be taken when an infraction is committed.

Mr. Young would do well to remember that he has tarnished not only his name, but the NMSU athletics department. As an NMSU alum, I am disgusted that a student – one with a previous record of obscene misconduct – will have no charges brought against him. If the employee will not press charges, then the athletics department should initiate appropriate disciplinary action.

Southern New Mexico stands as a bastion of multicultural diversity. It constitutes the hopes and aspirations of both migrant worker and natural born citizen alike. It is a growing melting pot that embodies the greatness of what many see as the American dream. But the greatness of such diversity is stricken dumb if it allows bigotry to silence any person or group.

The burgeoning gay and lesbian community in Las Cruces is vibrant, but forced underground by overt and covert bigotry. Overt, when people like Mr. Young utter slurs; and covert when the deed goes unpunished.

I hope Mr. Young receives more than a slap on the wrist.

Sincerely,
Brandon Aultman
NMSU 2005 Graduate
