The NCAA denied an eligibility waiver on 7-5 freshman center Sim Bhullar. The school appealed the decision and it was denied. As a non-qualifier, this means that Bhullar will not be able to play until next year. From what I've read and talking to his sister when he came here, that was the plan anyway, but if NMSU was able to get him cleared, it would have been a bonus.
Apparently the NCAA is evaluating the amateurism of Remi Barry. Barry played in the Aggies' exhibition game on Wednesday, but could miss early games this season.
The 2012 Pomeroy preseason rankings are listed here. Pomeroy ranks the Aggies No. 128 overall. The WAC is ranked No. 13. NMSU is the third ranked WAC team behind Utah State (49) and Nevada (78). Pomery projects Utah State finishing 11-3 in the WAC, Nevada going 10-4 and NMSU finishing 8-6 in league play. Pomeroy had the WAC ranked No. 14 in his final rankings from last year.
That figures another player, another season of "is he" or "isn't he". I wish Menzies would think about the financial impact on "Clearing House Issues". Would it have been better to use that money to find someone that can play immediately than someone who is in question? Here let me help you out for next seasons headlines "Bhullar Leaves Team Clearing House in Question."

ReplyDeleteWould have been great to see Remi Barry on the court this Fall but that looks in question now. Is it possible that Barry uses NMSU and its relatively low tuition costs to gain eligibility and then transfer somewhere else? What about Sim Bhullar? I'm skeptical that he ever plays for NMSU.
ReplyDeleteThe answer to anon753's question is entirely dependent on how good Remi is for his time here. If he is a top 3 player on an NCAA squad, then by all means he is worth waiting for. If he's no better than a fictional average replacement, then it's a waste.

agreed, 5:21...people criticize the strategy of how they get these players, but it is a credible one considering the circumstances....

5:21 AND 12:44. As to my original comment. I just think that it would have been better for NMSU to go find a couple of Juco players that are eligible, than one who is in question. If we have to wait a season and then some, was it really worth it to get him? What happens if they don't clear him? How much has NMSU invested from our dwindled athletic account already?
ReplyDeleteSometimes qualification risks work, sometimes they don't. Jahmar, Wen, Troy... Those qualify as successes in my mind, at least on the basketball court. Joyner, NDoye, maybe not as much. Jucos aren't a sure thing either- Paris Carter was brought in here w the express task of making three pointers immediately, and he was not good at it, and missed half of his only season.
ReplyDeleteMy only point was that if Berry and Bhullar ( who we intended to redshirt, btw) end up being critical pieces of a championship team for 2 or 3 years, then we won't really care that Remi missed a few games his freshman year, or that Bhullar was redshirted to start his career.
Does anyone have any insight as to why the NCAA is suddenly investigating Remi Barry's amateurism status. Obviously he was previously ruled eligible. Who initiated a complaint? What is the exact issue under investigation.

ReplyDeleteIn order to be considered a former Kentucky guard, don't you think he should have actually, ,you know, played there? He verballed when he was 15 and his only playing experience was at New Orleans. Ross Miller hasn't been cleared, but he's still recovering from minor offseason knee surgery. Lets assume he's cleared right now by the NCAA , he hasn't practiced, NMSU's guard rotation is four deep right now. Alll signs point to a redshirt year.

The NCAA has suspended players for amateurism. Menzies has said Barry will play at some point this season. Perhaps not early.
Well if a six game suspension is all he gets than I guess it was not a bad investment.
